THE WAY OF THE CROSS

The "Stations of the Cross" web page remains available throughout the year so that you, our visitor, may return and reflect on the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

In kingdoms touched by sin, the powerful feel no connection with those they exercise their power over. This leads to oppression, injustice, discrimination, and pain. In the reign of God, power is meant for service and to create the right relationships between all people. Jesus' crucifixion is a clear example of how powerful people, when confronted by the challenge to love and justice, chose instead to seek control, and, finally, to destroy what they did not understand. This is the Way of the Cross.

The First Station

How often do I go along with the crowd instead of standing up for what I believe in?
Do I ever let others control my thinking?
Have I ever judged someone?
Would I have joined this crowd condemning Jesus?

Jesus is Condemned to Death

Jesus is condemned because he has been faithful to his mission: because he has preached a Reign where there cannot be oppressor or oppressed. The representative of God and the representatives of the Empire condemn him, because they feel judged by Jesus. Jesus wants to be the last victim of the domination of some people over others. Let us remember all those who are condemned by our world to death or to an unjust life.

Jesus Escondenado a Muerte.

The Second Station

He acusado a alguien falsamente?

Jesus Carries His Cross

Jesus is scourged and, bleeding to death, crowned with thorns and burdened with a cross. Human blindness is so far reaching! The abuse of power is so extensive! But, in that cross Christians see the love with which God loves us. Let us think of those people who have been burdened with a heavy and unjust cross. Jesus is with them. We have to be with them.

The Third Station

What are some things that cause me to stumble and fall?
How do I handle it when I fall?
Do I just quit instead of getting up and going on?

Jesus Falls for the First Time

When he sees what is coming to him, Jesus feels fear, sadness, and anguish. His disciples fail him and fell asleep. Jesus feels abandoned along with those who are forsaken under oppression. Let us think of all the people who live forgotten, alone, and helpless, forsaken by all, not finding solidarity or help anywhere. Jesus asks us today to stand with those who suffer.

The Fourth Station

Jesus Meets His Mother

When her eyes encounter those of Jesus, pain pierces Mary's heart. But that is where Mary penetrated the mystery of the love of her son. Only in the cross do we know Jesus as he is. Let us think of the mothers and fathers who see their children suffer and are not able to do anything. They can find their hope in Mary.

Jesus Encuentra a Su Madre

The Fifth Station

How willing am I to let others help me?
Do I see needing help as a sign of weakness?
How willing am I to help others?

Simon of Cirene is Asked to Carry the Cross

So that Jesus does not die on the way, the soldiers burden with the cross the person they see. Jesus and Simon are images of the people enslaved by power. Was Simon's a voluntary or a compulsory solidarity? Simon thought he was carrying the cross of a condemned man and he was helping God. Let us think of the times we are asked to help our brothers and sisters to carry the cross. How do we react?

The Sixth Station

Veronica Wipes Jesus' Face

To wipe the bloodied face of Jesus was to wipe the bloodied image of God. A courageous woman did it. And she left this image as the best way of finding God's face on this earth. In faces disfigured by pain, exploitation and injustice we find the best image of God. Are we capable, as Veronica was, to break through all obstacles and prejudices and wipe the bloodied faces of those who suffer?

The Seventh Station

How many times have I struggled again and again even when others were helping me?
What am I struggling with that wears me out, hurts me, and makes me want to give up?

Jesus Falls for the Second Time

Abandoned by everyone, Jesus goes to the Father. He feels surrounded by the power of the evil one. He doesn't see clearly the future of the Reign of God he has preached. Dark omens of death are near the lives of many people who can't see their future clearly. Jesus is with those who beaten and do not see their hunger for justice fulfilled. We have to be with them if we want to be with Jesus. We have to keep our hope in the Father, as Jesus with them.

The Eighth Station

Jesus Speaks to the Women of Jerusalem

The women of Jerusalem cry before the prisoner who has been condemned to death: Jesus. But Jesus asks them to look at themselves. Jesus' death is a consequence of a society that has closed itself to God's grace, that has rejected the word of salvation brought by Jesus. Jesus' words to the women are at once a threat and a call to conversion. At threat because those who reject grace look for their own death . A call to conversion because it is still possible to change, to accept God's word and to live in solidarity striving to build the Reign of God in this world.

The Ninth Station

Who are the people who have shown me how to survive?
Who has shown me to get back up and go on with my life no matter how many times I fall?
Do I remember that God is with me at all times?

Jesus Falls for the Third Time

The blood of Jesus is mixed on the ground with so much innocent blood shed in the past and in the present. God cares about innocent blood. This is the blood caused by the sin of the person who wants to be god, slave of his or her own selfishness and murderer of his or her brothers and sisters. Let no one be deceived: God cares about innocent blood. That is why an angel comes to comfort Jesus. The bloodied one will be the risen one. The earth watered by blood will bloom in new life. Each person who has shed blood will have an angel and a resurrection.

The Tenth Station

Jesus is Stripped

To strip someone in public means to degrade him, to take away his dignity. That is what they do to Jesus. And that continues to be done to so many places and persons who are deprived of everything they had. Hope, however, does not lie on the greedy and corrupt people, but in Jesus who, deprived of everything, placed his trust in God alone. God is on his side. Trust lies in Jesus and in people who are despoiled: in those who have nothing to lose and have a right to expect everything from God. God will create new people out of them.

The Eleventh Station

Am I forgiving of those who nail me?
And what about the nails that I drive into others?
Am I aware of the pain that I cause Jesus when I don't follow his ways?

Jesus is Nailed to the Cross

Jesus is nailed hands and feet. They want to bleed him so he dies quickly and they get rid of him because he is a nuisance. But Jesus is stronger in his weakness than those who condemn him. From the cross he is capable of praying for his torturers. He does not excuse them, but simply underlines their madness and guilt. So he asks for forgiveness for them. This is the victory of the tortured one over the torturers. This is the victory of love and mercy.

The Twelfth Station

Jesus Dies on the Cross

Jesus of Nazareth, the great prophet who announced the new life of the Reign of God, is executed outside the city. He is expelled from society, religion, and life. It is at this moment that Jesus' supreme faithfulness is manifest: he sacrifices his life for what he believed and announced. He dies trusting his Father, God of love, and stronger than those who take his life away from him. We, followers of Jesus, cannot despair. We continue finding a source of hope in Jesus' cross. We are the followers of a crucified person. Like Him, we are distinguished by our service even unto death for the life of the world.

The Thirteenth Station

How do I deal with a loss or the death of someone I love?
Have I ever finished grieving over the loss of a friend or loved one?
Have I ever gotten over one of my parents leaving home?
Do I deal with my feelings in an honest open way?

Jesus is Taken Down from the Cross

Jesus' mother welcomes the body of her dead son in her arms. She has placed her trust in God: from that dead flesh, God will recreate new life. Once again, Mary has to give birth to a new life in pain and hope. Like Mary, the Christian community welcomes all persons, especially those who suffer for a cause. The community invites them to live in a new way. Their suffering, lived in solidarity and faith, gives way to a new people of God.

The Fourteenth Station

Jesus is Laid in the Tomb

The tomb is the ultimate loneliness. The dead are totally alone. Those who killed Jesus believed that once his body was buried his memory would be totally erased. But the tomb of Jesus in a garden place of life will become a source of new life. Jesus will be the seed that, buried, break through the ground and blooms forth. Jesus' life is in God's hands, just as the lives of all the disappeared and executed people are. God will not abandon his children.

The Resurrection

Jesus is Risen

A new history and a new life start on the first day of the week. Jesus is not in the tomb anymore. He who was crucified is risen. All the oppressive powers are judged by his resurrection. God is on the side of the crucified and not on that of those who killed him. Jesus' death has meaning. Being at the service of others has meaning. We can also expect to be risen by God to a new life, to total liberation.
